Franklyn A. Thompson was born in Sherman, Michigan, April 15, 1841. He lived there until he was nine years old when he moved with his parents to Black Earth, Wisconsin, where he first became acquainted with Miss Maria C. Carlton, afterwards his wife. He moved from Black Earth, Wisconsin, with his parents to Owatonna, Minnesota, in 1856. He enlisted from Steele county, Minn. on the 16th day of August, 1862, to serve three years or during the war and was mustered into the United States service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, on the 6th day of September, 1862 as a private of Captain C. Ambler's company "A" 10th regiment Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, Colonel James H. Baker commanding, Lieutenant Colonel Samuel P. Jennison, Major Michael Cook, Adj. James C. Baden, Quartermaster George W. Greeb. He was promoted to corporal and then to sergeant of his company. He was mustered out of the service at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, August 18, 1865, having served three years and twelve days in the service. He is a great grandson of Levi Thompson who served in the Revolutionary war under Colonel Benjamin Hinman and in the 13th regiment Connecticut militia under General Washington at the siege of New York.
Maria C. Carlton was born in Andover, Vermont, on the 23rd day of November, 1844, and lived there until she was five years of age and then moved with her parents to Black Earth, Wisconsin. She lived at Black Earth until 1855 when she moved, with her parents, to Owatonna, Minnesota, and there taught school and helped tend the farm while her father was away to the [Civil] war. Her father [Dexter Carlton] served three years in Company A 10th regiment, Minnesota Voluntary Infantry.
Franklin A. Thompson and Maria C. Carlton were married at Fairbault, Minnesota, on the 29th day of April, 1866. They lived at Owatonna, Minnesota, until 1867, when they moved to Evansville, Minnesota, and took up a homestead. They lived on their homestead until 1873 when they sold their farm and moved back to Owatonna, Minnesota. They lived at that place until 1883 when they again moved to Evansville. They lived there until 1887 when they moved to Wyndmere, North Dakota, living there until 1905, when they moved to Salem, Oregon, and have made this their home since.
There were born to Mr. And Mrs. Frank Thompson five children, Grace M., wife of Arthur Brougher, residing at Belmont, Montana; Lowell A. Thompson, residing at Oregon City, Oregon; Fred Thompson, residing at Salem, Oregon, and Alfred Thompson residing at Wyndmere, North Dakota, and Preston Thompson deceased. They have twenty-one grandchildren and six great grandchildren. (Written on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary 1916.)
