He was married to Priscilla 'Jane' Whiteley ca. 1847. Jane, sometimes called 'Phoebe' Jane, was born in Arkansas, and died in the Buffalo River area of Newton County.

Like his brother-in-law, Braxton Edgmon, he was ambushed and killed by bushwackers during the Civil War. His date of death is currently subject to debate, and may have even occured in late 1862.
