His mother was Mary White Horton, who died in Georgia in 1850 during childbirth of his younger brother John who also died then. He was raised by his father's second wife (and also his mother's sister) Elizabeth White Horton.

Obituary:
We regret to chronicle the death of Thurman M. Horton, which occurred at his home on Route 3, Oneonta about midnight Sunday Night. Mr. Horton had been hovering between life and death for nearly a week, suffering intensely with a complication of troubles which the physicians were unable to relieve.

The deceased was 66 years of age and was one of Blount's best and most useful citizens. In early youth he professed religion and joined the Congregational Methodist church at Nectar where his membership remained until his death.

He was a Master Mason and was true to the obligations of that order. About thirty Masons took part in the burial services.

Mr. Horton is survived by his widow, seven grown sons and six grown daughters, and a host of grandchildren.

The funeral services were held at Lebanon cemetery Tuesday and were conducted by Revs. S. F. Mabrey, W. R. Graves, S. S. Owens and S. C. Allgood.

There was a large crowd present to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed.
