William was the youngest of three children born to William Davidson Gibbons and his 2nd wife, Anna Roney. His siblings included his older brother John, (who was categorized as an ‘idiot,’) and his sister Jane. He also had seven older half-siblings. They were: Thomas, Rhoda, Araminta, Thomas Butler, Benjamin and twins Andrew Smith and Richard Cannine (the twins were adopted at birth).

In 1840, he is living with his parents and brothers John, Thomas Butler and Benjamin and his sister Jane in St. Joseph County, Indiana. In 1850, the family is living in Union township in the same county and includes his parents, brothers Thomas Butler and John and sister, Jane.

William’s father died in 1854 and he is found living with his mother and older brother, John, in Union township in the 1860 census. Later that year, on 23 Dec 1860, William married Susannah Penrod, daughter of Joseph and Sarah Penrod. The 1870 census as well as William’s pension papers document that they had three children together: William H., Ida Viola and Edwin Jasper. Edwin was born about 6 weeks after his father’s death.

William enlisted as a Private to serve in the Civil War: Company I, 128th Indiana Infantry on 25 Feb 1864 at South Bend. He mustered out on March 7, 1864 at Michigan City, was taken prisoner 1 Jun 1864 and died July 19th at Andersonville, Georgia. Cause of death, dysentery.
