Alvin Adams entered service to his country as a member of the 16th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. He was captured at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and died as a POW at Camp Sumpter in Georgia, know infamously as “Andersonville”, on October 22, 1864. His wife, Lydia Ann (Dawley) and son Frank Nelson Adams (age 3 when he died) lived in Franklin, MA. After the War, Alvin’s brother, Henry Clay Adams, married Lydia and they went on to have several more children.
