May was one of seven children born to Samuel B Palmer and his wife Caroline (Albert) Palmer. Samuel was a contractor and Democratic Party political figure. One of May's brothers, A Mitchell Palmer, was US Attorney Gen'l under Wilson, hiring J Edgar Hoover as his assistant and conducting what became known as the "Palmer Raids" in 1920, aimed to root out anarchists and communists. May married William A Miller in 1897 and they had two children; Caroline (1900-1989) and William Jr (1905-1982). There were no grandchildren. May died in 1944 and her husband William died in 1962.
