John S. Shreve was a son of William and Eleanor (Smith) Shreve. He came to Vernon county, Wisconsin, in 1853 and was numbered among the pioneers of the town of Greenwood. He was a Republican in politics and he served sixteen consecutive years as town assessor, also having been town treasurer, to which office he was elected in 1881. He and his wife were members of the local Christian church. He was a charter member of Hillsboro Lodge, No. 253, Free and Accepted Masons, and was also identified with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
