J. W. Koons who is said to be the first lawyer to ever practice in Wellington, Texas, died in Sanger, Texas, last Tuesday afternoon at his home in that city. About two years ago he suffered a stroke of apoplexy and although he never fully regained his health he was not confined to his bed. He was on the streets of Sanger only a few hours before his death. Mr. Koons was born in Kentucky and was 69 years, 4 months and 13 days of age at the time of his death. June 11, 1893 he was married to Miss Lina Alexander of Wellington and to this union was born one daughter, Mrs. Hugh Porter of Garland, and three sons who are Judge W. A. Koons of Denton, Leslie Koons, who died several years ago and J. Marshall Koons of Fort Worth. He resided in Wellington more than 32 years ago, moving from here to Sanger where he had resided continuously since then, engaged in his chosen profession as a lawyer. Mr. Koons was not only one of the first lawyers of this section of the Panhandle, but he was one of the first school teachers of Wellington.
