Funeral services for Maj. Gen. Lawrence Coffin Ames retired commander of the California Air National Guard and strockbroker will be held at 4.p.m. today at the First Unitarian Church 14th and Castro streets, Oakland. He died Wednesday at the age of 84.
Gen. Ames was a native of West Newton, Mass. After attending Newton High School, the Berkshire School and graduating from Amherst College, he enlisted in the French Foreign Legion in World War I. A transfer to become a U.S. Army pilot kindled a lifelong interest in aviation.
He became a general partner of the Irving Lundborg & Co. brokerage in 1936 and remained active with the firm now merged with Kidder, Peabody & Co over the last 55 years.
In 1940 he was recruited to attend the Industrial War College and retired to duty with the Army Air Force in World War II., assisting Marine assault forces in the South Pacific. He later served with the War Department general staff and assisted in planning such facilities as Hamilton Air Force Base and Treasure Island.
Following the war he organized the 61st Wing of the California National Guard, retiring in 1957 as chief of the state air guard service.
He was a former director of Lockheed and the National Ice & Cold Storage Co. and was a director of Continental Air Lines, River Farms and Kingwell Brothers. He was president of Pierce Rodolph Storage.
When Gen. Ames and his wife, Helen Rodolph, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1974, the Horace Heidt band played, as it had at their wedding.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; a son of Piedmont; a daughter of Smith Valley, Nev.,; a sister, Katherine Ames George of Peterboro, N.H.; and 7 grandchildren. Donations to charity are preferred.
