Robert J. Ackerman

Casper - Services for Robert J. Ackerman, 64, of Casper will be held Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Dennis Henn and Susan Henn of the First Presbyterian Church of Princeton, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Mr. Ackerman died Dec. 16, 1989, from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease). He was born Dec. 28, 1924, at Minneapolis, Minn., the son of William P. and Marie G. (Castner) Ackerman. He grew up and attended school at Bridgeport, Neb., and Sidney, Neb.

After graduating from Sidney High School in 1943, he served for three years with the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and during the Occupation. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Nebraska, where he lettered in football.

He worked for two years with his father in the insurance business in Sidney, worked for two years in the stock brokerage business in San Francisco, and in 1954 went to work as a scout for the Ohio Oil Co. (now Marathon), where he later worked in the land department. In 1958 he became an independent in the oil business.

On July 1, 1956, he was married to Phyllis L. Wiggs at Spokane, Wash.

Mr. Ackerman was a member of the Wyoming Association of Petroleum Landmen, the Casper Petroleum Club, the Casper Country Club, of which he was a past president and the Wyoming Racquet Club, which he had helped to found. He served on the Natrona County Parks Board and was a life sponsor of Ducks Unlimited.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Casper; two sons of Redondo Beach, Calif., and Seattle, Wash.; one daughter of Princeton; his mother, Marie G. Ackerman of Sidney; two sisters, Jolene Robinson and Joanne Goodwin, both of Sidney; three grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, William P. Ackerman, and one brother, William Ackerman.

Flowers or memorials to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association or to a charity of the donor's choice would be equally appreciated by the family. Memorials may be left at Memorial Chapel.

Friends may call at Memorial Chapel on Monday evening until 7:30 p.m. and on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
