"A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newport, Perry County, Pennsylvania, August 6, 1862, overstating his age by four years, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 13 as a private with Co. I, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 21, 1863. He also enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg February 14, 1864, as a private with Co. D, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865."

OBITUARY – W.M.D. SHEAFFER

W.M.D. Sheaffer died suddenly at his home in East Newport, Friday morning at 6:30 O'clock. Mr. Sheaffer had not been in the best of health for some time but was going around as usual and his death was a shock to his family and his many friends in this community and in Perry County where he had many acquaintances. Mr. Sheaffer ate hastily on Thursday evening and after reading the paper retired around 8:30 O'clock not complaining of feeling any different from any time previous. On Friday morning about 6 o'clock he called his wife and told her he had a pain in his left shoulder and side and after bating it with a solution and getting no result, Dr. L.A. Carl was summoned and before his arrival he had passed away. The deceased was the last surviving member of a family of ten. He was born in Sheaffer's Valley, this County, Aug. 6, 1845, died July 3, 1925, he was aged 79 years, 11 months and 5 days. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted Aug. 13, 1862, from Perry Co., PA and was mustered into the United States Service at Harrisburg as a private in Co. I, 133 Reg. Penna. Volunteer Infantry to serve 9 months under Capt. Albert R. Demaree and Col. T.B. Speakman. He was engaged in the Battles of Antietam Sept. 11, 1862; Fredericksburg, Dec 13, 1862; Mud March, Jan. 20 through 24 1863; Chancellorsville, May 14, 1863. He shared the fortunes of the Regiment in all its movements and engagements. Discharged May 21 1863, at Harrisburg, on account of expiration term. Re-enlisted Feb. 19, 1864, to serve one year during the war in Co. D, 187th Reg., Penna. Col Infantry under Captains J.A. Ege, and J.e. Frymire. Participated in Battles of Cold Harbor, Jun 1 to 12, 1864; Petersburg, June 15 – 30, 1864, when he was injured by a log falling on him, also wounded by a piece of shell while in service. Engaged at Weldon R.R., Aug 18, 1864. Moved to Philadelphia, engaged in garrison duty. Acted as Guard of Honor at the funeral obsequies of Pres. Lincoln. Finally and honorably discharged, Aug 31, 1865 at Harrisburg, PA. on account of close of the War. He was a member of Jones Post No. 448 G.A.G. of New Bloomfield, PA. after the close of the war he engaged in farming for some time. On Oct 12, 1875, he married Lizzie Weaver, daughter of Benj. And Leah Weaver, of Green Park, by the Re. W.T. Winbigler. The result of this union being seven children, three of whom are living: Edna A. Bowers, of Philadelphia; Edith E. at home; and Jos.R., of Newport. In 1833, entered in the mercantile business at Mender this County in which he was engaged for 3 years, sixteen which he acted as Post master. He also built up a successful Fire Insurance business, which he followed for 26 years and in which he was actively engaged up until the time of his death. Six years ago he removed to Wila and two years ago removed to his late home in East Newport. The deceased was a devout and consistent member of the Church of God since the age of 16 years. The services which were conducted by the Rev.T.V. Miller were held at this late residence in East Newport, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment in Newport Cemetery.
