"George W. Adkins, of Co. G, enrolled [6th IN] Nov. 28, 1863 in Tripton (now N. Vernon, aka Lick Skillet) by Lt. McGannon as a Private; mustered in Dec. 29, 1863 in Indianapolis by Capt. Thatcher at age 38. He was 5’ 8” tall, dark complexion, dark eyes, and dark hair. Born Oct. 23, 1825 in Wayne Co., KY, employed as a farmer, resident of Tripton, Posey Co., IN. Transferred to Veteran Reserve Corps and discharged for disability Jun. 2, 1865. Notes: A Private from 6th IN Co. B before transferring to Co. F, 68th IN. In hospital in Nashville since Dec. 14, 1864. Empty folder in 44th Indiana Compiled Military Service Records. He filed Invalid Pension Application #512598 May 8, 1884 in AL. Died Apr 21, 1886; buried in Cagle Cemetery, Deerhead Cove, DeKalb Co., AL (A stone in Row 5 and one in Row 15). His widow Charlotte R. filed Widow’s Pension Application to receive Widow’s Pension Certificate #342048 Jul. 12, 1886 in AL."
