Enlisted on July 15, 1862 at Wake County, North Carolina as a Private in the 1st North Carolina Infantry, Company G at the age of 18. Wounded on November 27, 1863 at Payne's Farm, Virginia. POW on May 12, 1864 at Spotsylvania Court House, Virginia. Confined on May 14, 1864 to Point Lookout, Maryland. Transferred on August 6, 1864 to Elmira, New York. Died of pneumonia as a POW.
