James Alexander was the son of Nicholas Daniel Shuptrine 1823-1903 and Rebecca Allen Shuptrine 1821-1873.

He was born 25 June, 1858 in Kennard, Houston County, Texas (Hilde Farley papers in file 7-44). Died July 1, 1921 on his farm near Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Burial July, 1921 in the Old Zion Cemetery in Tadmor, Houston County, Texas. Occupation: farmer and landlord.

James grew sugar cane and sold the syrup. He leased some of his land to tenants. he was politically active and was a Democratic delegate for Coltharp Township in the Democratic primaries in June, 1891 (The Crockett Sentinel),vol 5, no 19, June 15, 1894.

He married first, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Harrison, daughter of William Daugherty Harrison and Jincy Ann "Jane" Patton, in 1880, in Kennard, Houston County, Texas, born 16 April 1857 in Kennard, Texas (date from tombstone). Died in childbirth 18 Feb 1900, in Kennard, Houston County, Texas. (1900 Census, Houston County, Texas) Burial: Feb 1900 in the Old Zion Cemetery in Tadmor, Houston County, Texas. Her husband was buried next to her.

He married second, Emma Beathard Maples, 7 November 1901, in Kennard, Houston County, Texas. She was born in 1862 in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas. Died 20 April 1932 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas. Burial in New Energy Cemetery in Houston County, Texas. There is no grave marker. No children resulted from this marriage.
