Albert F. Hoelting : Longtime Shawnee home builder dies

Albert F. Hoelting built hundreds of homes throughout Johnson County, but Shawnee was favorite city and his longtime home.

Hoelting, a well-known builder and developer, died on Wednesday at the age of 91.

Shawnee City Councilman Frank Goode described Hoelting as "aggressive and progressive. He helped expand the city of Shawnee. He was a great asset to our city."

Goode said that Hoelting's building legacy was highly recognized.

"A lot of people think a great deal of him," he said. "He helped shape our city."

Hoelting began building houses more than 50 years ago. Known for his numerous residential developments, Hoelting left a legacy that his children are now following. All eight of his sons work in construction throughout the area.

Second-generation Hoelting builders include Albert, David, Richard, Tim, Mark, Mike, Robert and Ken. Hoelting and his sons worked together to construct numerous Hoelting Family Neighborhoods in the cities of Mission, Shawnee, Leawood and Overland Park.

Mark Hoelting and five of his brothers are full-time builders, while two other brothers operate successful contracting businesses.

The father of 11, Hoelting's life revolved around work and family, said Mark Hoelting. "He was always being productive - whether on the job or working on his house, lawn or car," he said. "He was always busy doing something. He has been described as the proverbial jack-of-all trades."

Family was equally important to his father, Hoelting said.

"The biggest thing with Dad was family," he said. "He worked all week, but we still had a sit-down meal every night, Monday through Friday, and on Sundays. Sunday was sacred to him. It was family time."

Hoelting added, "Dad taught us the value of hard work, saving money and spending time with our families."

A long-time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Albert Hoelting also was a member of the Knights of Columbus, a past member of the Greater Kansas City Home Builders Association and a charter member and on the Board of Directors for Citizens State Bank.

Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday at St. Joeseph Catholic Church in Shawnee, with burial at Resurrection Cemetary. Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at St. Joesph Catholic Church in Shawnee.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions to Advice and Aid Pregnancy Center, 11031 W. 75th Terrace, Shawnee, KS 66214.
