Two Fliers Die in Crash At Alvarado
Pilot Meets Death In 50 Yards of Place Of Birth; Passenger Also Native of Town.
Cleburne, Texas, Feb. 7. - Two Alvarado youths, one a pilot and the other an aviation mechanic, crashed at 10:35 a.m. Sunday within a short distance of their birthplaces on the edge of Alvarado, Johnson County.
Flight Officer John Henry Jackson, about 21, of the Ferry Command stationed at Washington, D.C., and Pvt. Dell Shelton, 24, aviation mechanic from Tarrant Field, 404th Air Base Squadron, on a routine training flight, were instantly killed when the single-motor advanced training plane in which they were riding struck a power line and then a boxcar in front of the Santa Fe station on the edge of town.
The crash occurred within fifty yards of the spot where Jackson was born, and within four blocks of Shelton's home.
Col. W. Erickson of Tarrant Field, who investigated the crash, said the accident was attributed to low flying. The bodies were taken to Fort Worth. A wrecker from the field arrived about 3:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon to pick up the wreckage of the plane, which was scattered over a wide area.
Jackson received his wings on Nov. 29, 1942.
At the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was a sergeant in the ground crew of the Air Corps at Hickam Field and was cited for bravery under fire. He returned to the United States for his pilot's training. Survivers include his mother, Mrs. Ollie Jackson of Alvarado; four sisters, Miss Hazel Jackson, Miss Helen Jackson and Miss Glenna Jackson of Washington, D.C., and Miss Muriel Jackson of Alvarado, and a brother, C. R. Jackson.
Private Shelton was the son of Johnson County Auditor and Mrs. E. L. Shelton, Alvarado. He also is survived by two brothers, Capt. E. L. Shelton Jr., who is serving with the armed forces in Africa, and Billy Joe Shelton, Alvarado. Shelton had been in training at Tarrant Field only three or four months.
Private Shelton was a four-year letter man in football at Alvarado High School. He received his degree at the University of Texas.
The crash was the first plane fatality involving a Tarrant Field man since the opening of the field's training program last October.
