Former Cameron County Commissioner and community activist Mary Lenore (Johnston) Donovan, 96, of Elmwood Drive, Emporium, died Wednesday, (Feb. 18, 2009) in the Guy and Mary Felt Manor following a brief illness.
The daughter of Esther Ramsey and Dr. Jesse Dalton Johnston, Mary was born at the home of her grandparents in Bolivar, Pa. on April 7, 1912. A 1929 graduate of Emporium High School, she attended Indiana University and graduated from Bryant & Stratton.
In 1934, she married John J. "Dinty" Donovan, who died in 1990.
A lifelong resident of Emporium, Mrs. Donovan was active in the Music Boosters, Community House, Girl Scouts, Community Chest, Cameron County Historical Society, and numerous other civic organizations.
Her public life also included 25 years as secretary of the Cameron County Public Library; 50 years of active involvement with the Cameron County Chapter of the Red Cross, of which she was chair for many years; and service on the Cameron County Board of Commissioners, which she served a chair.
She worked for many years in retail, as head bookkeeper in the Emporium Trust Company, and in the Public Assistance Office.
Mrs. Donovan traveled widely to more than 20 countries and frequently shared her views with letters to the editor that appeared in several area newspapers.
Surviving are a daughter, Ellen R. (John) Malizia, Emporium; six grandchildren: William D. (Susie) Jackson of Dallas, Texas; Lt. Col. S. Cody (Diane) Jackson of Atlanta, Ga.; Corrine (NOTE: spelled incorrectly here - her name is Corinne) Specht of Mantua, N.J.; Evelyn J. (Gavin) Williams of Stone Mt., Ga.; Cynthia A. (Neil) Smith of Honolulu, Hawaii and Barnstaple, England; and Mary E. (Michael) Smith of Bellevue, Wash.; 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, including Bruce D. Johnston and Kent Johnston.
She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, her brother, James D. Johnston. A daughter, Esther D. Jackson, died on Feb. 24, 2009.
Friends were received in the Coppersmith- Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, where funeral and committal services were held with the Rev. Gary Atkinson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Emporium, officiating. Burial was in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.
Memorials may be made to the Cameron County Ambulance Service or the American Red Cross.
