A Buncombe County lawyer, Brown enlisted as a private at age 29 and in September received a transfer as the regiment's assistant quartermaster, with a collateral promotion to captain. The 4th North Carolina received the official designation as the the 14th North Carolina. He died July 6, 1862 in a Richmond hospital.
