Norman K. Whitney of Bend died Saturday of cancer. He was 85.
A viewing will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Mr. Whitney was born Dec. 11, 1918, in Mendon, Utah, to Herbert and Hannah (Sorenson). He attended Brigham Young University on a music scholarship and graduated in 1941 and later earned a master's degree in music education from the University of Idaho in 1952.
He served in the Navy during World War II and played in the Navy band in England. He married Ruth Melba Borg on June 23, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mr. Whitney worked as a music teacher in Prineville. After moving to Bend in 1953, he served as director of music education in Bend public schools until his retirement in 1976.
He also taught private flute lessons and directed the Bend Municipal Band for 15 years. He was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed golfing, fly fishing, hunting and tennis.
Mr. Whitney was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he also held several leadership posts. Survivors include his wife of Bend; two sons, Norman of Garnerville, Nev., and Brad of Portland; three daughters, Janet Pickens of Lacey , Wash., Carol Still of Bend, and Judy Thompson of Issaquah, Wash.; a sister, Louise Smith of Provo, Utah; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
