Thank you to Peggy Dochterman for the following obituary:

John W. Hughes Died at Ft. Madison, Iowa

John W. Hughes, an old and esteemed former resident of Scotland County, died at this home of his son and daughter at Fort Madison, Iowa, Friday, June 22, 1917, of acute indigestion. The body was brought to Mt. Moriah Church in this county, where on Tuesday, June 26, the funeral was held, services being conducted by Rev. Kious, of Luray. Remains were then buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.

At the time of his death, Mr. Hughes was aged 81 years, and had long been a peaceful, law-abiding, liberty-loving citizen of our county. He leaves to mourn his death, the wife and fifteen children, fourteen of whom were present at the funeral. Mrs. L. M. Allen of Memphis is one of the children. These have the sincere sympathy of everyone in this hour of bereavement.
