James A. Mowers, 58, of Menomonie, died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at his home in rural Menomonie.
He was born Jan. 26, 1940, in Menomonie to Arthur and Agnes (Johnson) Mowers. He was raised in Menomonie and graduated in 1957 from Menomonie High School. He then attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout, later graduating from UW-Eau Claire.

Jim served in the U.S. Army in Germany for three years. He taught mathematics at Durand High School. He farmed for a few years in the town of Dunn, and also worked for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Jim enjoyed restoring old cars and woodworking. He was an active environmentalist and recently donated half the value of a 58-acre parcel of land he owned that overlooked the Red Cedar State Trail to the DNR. According to terms of the transaction, development can never occur on the 58 acres.

Jim is survived by a daughter, Christina Mowers of Oklahoma City; one son, Matthew Mowers of Knapp; his mother, Agnes Mowers of Menomonie; one sister, Judy (Ken) Cropp of Winneconne; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father. A private family memorial service is planned. Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie is assisting the family with arrangements.
