Dr. Russell Jay Brown passed away on April 1, 2010 in Grand Junction. He was 83 years old.

Dr. Brown was born on February 6, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Leslie J. and Nancy (Emoring) Brown. He spent his childhood in Des Moines, graduating from high school there.

Russell served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1947. He received his undergraduate degree at Drake University in 1950. In 1954 he received his graduate degrees at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines. He completed his internship in 1955 at Rocky Mountain Hospital in Denver.

Dr. Brown lived in the Denver area from 1957 through 1997. Dr. Brown was a member of the American Osteopathic Association and American College of General practitioners in Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.

He enjoyed mountain climbing; he had climbed all of Colorado's 14,000 ft. peaks.

He conducted many medical missions to Central America in remote jungle areas. He traveled extensively with family and friends all around the world.

He enjoyed white water rafting in Costa Rica at age 72. He also enjoyed mountain biking, rock climbing and studying ancient cultures.

Dr. Brown worked two years in Michigan before entering private practice in Westminster, Colorado. He ended his private practice in February, 1987 at the age of 60. He then worked at the Ft. Lyons, VA Hospital for ten years until his retirement in Grand Junction in 1997.

A memorial for Dr. Brown will be held at Martin Mortuary on April 8th at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Lee Wymann will officiate. Burial will be at the VA Cemetery at 3:00 p.m.
