"In 1885 George L. Warner went to Valley Twp. Hodgeman Co., KS, in a group move of Litchfield, MI folks called the "Michigan Colony". George had a sod house built before the family of the first 7 children and his wife moved there in the fall of 1886. A stone school house was built on George's land after the Colony arrived.

"At the time the colony came West, the tide of immigration was coming in and covered wagons could be seen creeping along the cross-country roads daily.

"In 1900 the family moved back to MI for about 7 years, then returned to Kansas and located on the George Curtis farm near Bellefort, in Ford Co., six miles east of Spearville, Kansas.

"The family then moved to Stanton Co., Kansas, and farmed their own half section. When George's wife passed away in 1926, he went to live with his children, and lastly with his daughter, Mrs. Blanche Roberts and family."

George was ... "born July 7, 1849, at Butler, Branch, Michigan, and passed away Thursday morning, October 24, 1940, at Ordway, Colorado, where he was making his home with a daughter, Mrs. Blanche Roberts, and family.

"Mr. Warner resided in the state of his birth [MI] until the year 1885 when he and his family joined what was termed the "Michigan Colony" and came to Hodgeman County to reside. This Colony was composed of about a dozen families among whom were the Joe Watson, W. F. Eakin, Glode D. Lewis, and B. F. Kenyon families who are well remembered by numerous persons who were present at the funeral. The Colony settled in Valley Township, and so far as is known, Mr. Warner was the last of the older members to pass away.

"The Warner family continued to reside in Valley Township until the year 1900 when they decided to return to Michigan to live but after staying there about seven years, again returned to Kansas and located on the George Curtis farm near Bellefont, in Ford County, six miles East of Spearville, where a progressive farming business was carried on.

"Mr. Warner was one of our best citizens and farmers, coming here when the country was new and undeveloped, and he did his share in helping to make the community a better place in which to live.

"After residing in Ford County a number of years after the return of the family from Michigan, they moved to Stanton County, Kansas, where Mr. Warner purchased a half section of fine land and continued his farming operations for a number of years, and until his wife, Mrs. Almeda Warner, passed away in 1926, after which time he went to live with his children, and lastly with his daughter, Mrs. Blanche Roberts and family.

"Old friends and neighbors of the Warner family will remember the kind hospitality always accorded them when visiting at the home, and in the early days the Warner home was sort of a community center where the young and old alike gathered for entertainment and amusement.

"On January 1, 1870, George L. Warner and Miss Almeda Rossman were united in marriage, and to that union nine chldren were born, namely, Mrs. May Rider, Edward J. Warner, Herbert L. Warner, Mrs. Ollie E. Hubbell, Mrs. Blanche Roberts, Mrs. Nellie Gaskill, Mrs. Marion P. Hubbell, George who died in infancy, and Albert F. Warner. The only surviving children above named are Edward J. Warner, residing in Oregon; Blanche who is now Mrs. Byron L. Roberts, of Ordway, Colorado; and Marion P. who is now Mrs. Eben Hubbell, of Bellefont, Kansas.

"Besides the surviving chldren above named Mr. Warner left 23 grand-children and 44 great grand-children, one sister, Mrs Lillian Faulkner, of Litchfield, Michigan and other relatives.

"Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Jetmore Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, The Rev. Charles S. Hutsell. The mixed quartet, W. M. Seacat, Miss Adell Ling, Miss Thelma Hubbell and Earl Pitts with Miss Maxine Hubbell accompanist, sang the beautiful songs, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere", and "Jesus Lover of My Soul."

"The pall bearers were men who were neighbors of the Warner family when they resided in Hodgeman county and were George D. Sinclair, George H. Goebel, E.N. Adams, Joe and Malcolm McKibbin and C.F. Baker.

"Interment was beside his wife and little son George in Fairmount Cemetery, Jetmore."
