"Willard Campbell, the beloved son of Mr. and Mrs. James Campbell died November 15th, at 3:30 p. m., at his father's residence No. 2 Westmoreland Place, St. Louis, Mo. He was the great-grandson of the late Elisha Shelland of Otsego county, the grandson of the Hon. G. W. Von Platner, who died abroad many years ago and Lois L. Shelland, the authoress, who was loved and admired for her sweet personality, her noble charity and loving nature. He was also the great-grandson of John Von Platner, physician and theologian in Vienna, Austria, where he lived for many years and where he died, and Katherine E. Livingston Van Rensselaer. Young Mr. Campbell was a great student, very talented and a beautiful character. He was quite an invalid for several years. At last acute Bright's disease caused his death. His mother was his constant companion who tried to fill his life with so much sunshine and happiness that he would not feel that he was an invalid and she succeeded as only a gentle noble woman could whose life was wrapped up in her boy. We remember her as a pretty brown-eyed girl very fond of her grandfather. Now we see her a beautiful woman whose heart strings have been torn by the love of her only boy whom she idolized. We are very happy to know she has a young daughter in her seventeenth year who not only resembles her lovely grandmother personally but her beautiful character as well. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell and daughter have our sympathy." ["The Otsego Farmer & Republican" (Cooperstown, NY), Dec. 9, 1910, p. 7]
