W. P. SMULL SUCCUMBS TO DISEASE

DEATH CLAIMS ONE OF HARRISBURG'S BEST KNOWN CITIZENS

PROMINENT IN POLITICS

Once President of Select Council--a Brother of the Late John Smull

William P Small died yesterday noon at his home 402 North Third Street. Mr Smull was one of the city's best known citizens. He had been ill for some time and critically ill for more than a week. He was afflicted with a complication of diseases which developed very rapidly lately. Up to last Sunday he retained his faculties but then became unconscious and remained so to the end.

Mr. Smull was a native of Harrisburg. He was born here in 1837, being in his sixty-second year when death occurred. He was a son of John and Harriet P. Smull, who came to this city from Berks County, where the family can trace its history back to the earliest settlers. His mother was a daughter of Rev. Dr. Pauli, a well known minister, and Mr. Smull bore his grandfather's name. John Smull, father of the deseased, was at one time proprieter of the Washington Hotel, now known as the Commonwealth. He died over a half century ago and left a widow and four children. Levan, John, Anne and the deseased. William was the last of his family. John is remembered all over the country as the originator of the famous Smull's legislative hand book. This little volume is still recognized legislative guide book of the state and has been copied for use in other legislatures. John was resident clerk of the house for some time.

Deceased received his education in the public schools of town and acted as his brother John's assistant when he was resident clerk. For some time after the latter's death William edited the hand book. He was prominent in the politics of the city and once was a candidate for the mayoralty nomination on the Republican ticket. Dr. Walter was his opponent. At the conclusion of this contest Mr. Smull retired from active participation in the local campaigns of his party but continued interested until too ill to pay attention to outside matters. He was the 4th ward's representative in select council at one time and served as president of that body from 1886 to 1899. A score of years ago Mr. Smull wedded Miss Mary Miller, of this city, who survives him.

Deceased was a member of the Ancient and Illustrious Order Knights at Malta and representatives of that body in this city will attend his funeral. It is known however, that Rev. George S. Chambers, pastor of the Pine Street Presbyterian Church will officiate and that the interment will be made in the Harrisburg cemetery.
