NEWMAN P. STRIBLING
The sad news came to Rockdale early Tuesday morning of the death of Newman P. Stribling, which occurred, at a Houston hospital Monday night, at 9:45, following an operation for appendicitis the previous Saturday afternoon. The news came as a distinct shock, as Newman was born and reared in Rockdale and numbered his friends here literally by the hundreds.
A brief account of his illness is to the effect that he was taken sick last Thursday but his condition was not thought serious until Saturday when an operation was deemed necessary. This operation was performe at 1 p.m., and he was thought to be doing well until peritonistis developed. A second operation failed to relieve the condition and the end came as above stated.
Newman Stribling was born in 1889, and was one of the most popular boys Rockdale has ever sent out into the world. Possessed of a whole-souled, genial disposition, he made friends of all with whom he was associated. He was a graduate of the Rockdale High School, and after completing the school course associated himself with the business life of the city in various capacities. He established the first motion picture theater this city ever had and was later engaged in the confectionery business.
Newman was built of the stuff of which progressive citizens are made. He was a grandson of the late Dr. J. H. Stribling, a pioneer Baptist minister who for many years was pastor of the Rockdale church. He was also a grandson of the late Judge J. S. Perry --thus tracing his lineage back through most noble sires. In 1912 he was married to Miss Mary Hewitt of this city, and about five years ago they removed to Houston where Newman accepted a position with Wm. D. Cleveland & Company, cotton factors. For the past three years he had been with the accounting department of the Gulf Refining Company of Houston. Surviving him are his wife and three children, and his mother, Mrs. E. B. Phillips, besides many other relatives of lesser degree.
The remains were brought to Rockdale Tuesday afternoon, and the funeral was held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the residence of the widow's sister, Mrs. H. G. Murphree. Religious services at the house were conducted by Rev. R. E. Roberts of the Christian church, assisted by Jesse Garrett of the Baptist church. Both ministers spoke consoling and pointed the bereave ones to the only solace in time sorrow - the __ of Calvary. The remains were borne to the I.O.O.F. Cemetery and tenderly laid to rest beneath a curtain of beautiful flowers -- mu___ute of the love Rockdale people had for this fine young man who ___fulness to fulfill a purpose ___ none of us are wise enough to ____.
