The Johnstown Tribune, Monday, July 23, 1945:

Kenneth Reed, 8, Drowned in Pool Along Benscreek

Rescue Crews Unable to Revive Victim; With Boy Companions

Kenneth Reed, eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott H. Reed of Johnstown, R. D. 3, was drowned Saturday evening while he was swimming in the Benscreek near the site of what formerly was Crystal Beach Park. Rescue crews worked over the youthful victim for more than an hour after he was dragged from the water but were unable to revive him. Dr. Gordon Bell, Memorial Hospital physician, pronounced the boy dead at 8:45 p. m. P. C. Dosch, Somerset County coroner, later ruled that death was accidental. The drowning occurred about 7:30 p. m. Saturday at a point on the stream, several hundred feet from Route 53, where a fallen tree had blocked the stream after a recent storm and formed a pool. The Reed boy was swimming with two companions- Arthur Firm, 10, and Albert Kleinman, seven. Details of the fatal accident were not established. One report was that the Reed boy was wading in the water and apparently lost his footing.

Found by Stephen Smear

When the young swimmer disappeared, the Kleinman boy, who is his nephew, ran to a nearby tavern and summoned help. Stephen J. Smear, proprietor of the tavern, waded into the pool and finding the water too deep to reach the missing lad, dived twice into the pool to locate the victim. The Ferndale, Dale and Conemaugh fire companies rushed rescue squads to the scene. The city fire department sent its squad car and Memorial Hospital dispatched an ambulance with a physician and nurse, to aid in the rescue work. A resuscitator and an inhalator were used in the unsuccessful attempt to revive the boy. Hundreds of spectators gathered to watch the rescue work. Parents of the Reed boy were summoned to the scene from their home near Ideal Park. The three boys were reported to have been alone in the pool at the time of the drowning. Residents of the neighborhood were unaware of their presence there until the Kleinman boy called for help. Estimates on the length of time the victim was in the water ranged from 10 to 30 minutes.

Native of Johnstown

Kenneth Reed was born in Johnstown on November 17, 1936, a son of Scott H. and Sue E. (Orris) Reed. Surviving are his parents and the following brothers and sisters: Scott Ernest and Delmer E. Reed, both of Piney Al.; Mrs. Esther Kleinman, Johnstown R. D. 3, and Mrs. Ethel Bender, 561 Corinne St. A brother, Merle, is deceased. Friends are being received at the Reed home.
