Col J Milton French died at El Canto, Cal, on the third of January, aged 81 years, after an illness of several months. Col French lived the larger part of his life in Bland and Mercer counties, and is known throughout this section, having practiced law in the counties of this section for a number of years. He was the first judge of the criminal court of Mercer county.
Col French was born in Bland county September 12, 1834, and when the civil war broke out enlisted as a private, and worked his way up step by step to colonel of the sixty-third Virginia infantry. He engaged in many battles and was wounded at Chicamauga, and near the close of the war was again wounded at New Hope Church, in Georgia, it was thought at first mortally, but he recovered, and returning home began the practice of law at Bland court house. In 1879 he moved to Princeton. He was a very eloquent speaker and was in great demand as a campaigner by the democratic party of which he was a member. On the creation of the criminal court, Governor McCorkle appointed him judge, and he served two years, when he again took up the practice of law. Ten years ago he went to the west where some of his children had preceded him and at the time of his death was engaged in farming. He was buried by the Confederate veterans in the veterans' plot in the cemetery at El Canto. He was twice married and is survived by the following sons and daughters: Wirt A French, of Princeton; R N and Geo T French, of Douglass, Ariz; Rev Jas T French of Los Angeles, Cal; Mrs Harry Cooley, of Texas; Mrs Wm Jordan, of Bristol, Tenn; Mrs John Sincock, of Pittsburg, Pa. - Bluefield Telegraph
