He was first taught by a private tutor,Monsieur Sprunette,then went to school in Alexandria,taught by Mr.Whiting,and St.Timothy's Hall Military School,near Baltimore.From there he went to St.John's Academy,at Annapolis.Sent to Bolmar's,at West Chester,Pa.
In 1858,he went with the expedition sent out by President Buchanan to deliver goods promised by General Harden to Indians in return for their good behavior,and at the same time to explore the headquarters of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers.

When Colonel W.C.Wickham,of the Fourth Virginia Cavalry,was promoted to Brigadier-General,he applied for John Mason Lee as assistant adjutant-general,with the rank of Captain,in which position he served until William H.F.Lee was made major general,and was then assigned to to him as adjutant and inspector-general,with the rank of Major.
On his way to Gettsyburg,he was wounded at a little town in Pennsylvania called Hanover,and was sent from there to Richmond with the wounded and stayed with his mother,who was then located at the Arlington Hotel.
When he recoverd from his wound,he rejoined William H.F.Lee and was with him at the surrender at Appomattox.
In the battles of Bull Run,Sharpsburg,the heavy fighting around Fredericksburg,Spotsylvania Courthouse,Haw's Shop and on June 9th,1863,at Fleetwood Hill,in Culpeper county,where Colonel W.H.F.Lee was wounded and Colonel Sol.Williams,of Second North Carolina,was killed.
