His parents were Sampson A. Capps and Esther Smith. He moved from Grainger Co., TN to Lincoln Co., Mo in 1828. He unofficially served in the Civil War under General Dun and General Green.
He married Permelia Ann Armstrong on 6 Mar 1832 in Lincoln Co., MO. They had five children: Sampson (dying in infancy), Thomas Armstrong, Isaiah Columbus, a daughter and a son (the latter two dying in Illinois with their mother sometime in 1846). After her death, he married the "Widow" Mary Rand about 1856 in Wisconsin and divorced her about 10 yrs later. His last marriage was to Harriet Slavens on 13 Aug 1875 in Lincoln Co., MO and he considered himself a very blessed man for doing so.
