Jacob formerly was a rural mail carrier on old Waterloo R.R. 5, which covered Burksville and Wartburg. During bad weather when roads would become impassable he would walk the route, talking two or three days to complete his rounds. He later worked as a section hand for the G.M.&O. railroad. He also served as an alderman on the Waterloo City Council.
