Eldest child of John Aaron and Emily (Smith) Rawlins, he seems to have had health issues at least since late adolescence or early adulthood. After a childhood filled with loss, President Grant accepted his resignation from the US Marine Academy on 12 Jan 1876. He lived for a time with his father's parents; he was "at home", aka, without work, on the 1880 census. Lovisa died in 1891 and James in 1893. The last 17 - 27 years of his life were spent in Craig Colony for Epileptics in Groveland.
