My paternal great grandmother was known as "Tillie", was born in Weisstein, Waldenburg, Schlesien Province, Prussia. This area is now part of Poland. She was daughter of Robert Grieger and Pauline Karlowski. We believe she was orphaned at an early age, so was raised by her aunt and uncle August & Louise Phillips. "Tillie" met her husband Johann Jakob Luley in Kiel, Germany. They married in 1890 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Their first child was my grandmother Ida Mathilde Antonie Luley. "Tillie and her 2 children immigrated to the USA on the ship S.S. Deutschland arriving in New York, Sept 1, 1900. They went immediately to St. Louis, Missouri, where husband Johann had arrived 5 months earlier to find work and a place to live. After Johann deserted his family in 1903, Christiana obtained a divorce, then married a family friend Fredrich Henry Charles Meins. They removed to Minneapolis, MN. In 1906, a son Walter Cristian Heinrich Meins was born. Soon after, this family removed to San Pedro, California. "Tillie" remarried a third time after 1910 to August Timms. She was known from then on as "Grandma Timms". She suffered a stroke in 1940 shortly after the death of her oldest son Gus Meins (a Hollywood director). She died in 1955.
