Matilda Carman Mundy was born 1810 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, NJ the 2nd of 11 known children (2 boys/9 girls) born to Justice of the Peace and farmer, Judge Simeon Mundy and his wife, Isabel/Isabella Carman. Both sons of Judge Mundy died in infancy, so this branch of the Mundy name died with him in 1865; although two daughters married Mundy cousins and had offspring, so in a sense, the name was carried on.

She was the paternal grandchild of Henry Mundy, Revolutionary war veteran who served in the Middlesex Co. Militia & NJ State Troops and his wife, Hume Ayres; and gr-grandchild of Samuel Mundy Sr. and Elizabeth Griffith of The Landing, near Pisctaway, Middlesex County, NJ. She is a direct descendant of this family's New Jersey patriarch, Nicholas Munday/Mundy of England (ca 1668-1734) who first settled in Massachusetts but came to Piscataway about 1655 with others from that area fleeing religious repressions; and were early members of the Stelton Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church of Piscataway). On her mother's side, she was the maternal grandchild of Maj. Phineas Carman and Huldah Ayres, a soldier in the Revolutionary War after 1778. He participated in the battle of Springfield, N.J. and other engagements and was wounded in the arm in an expedition to Staten Island in 1779. He was also one of the original directors of The State Bank of New Brunswick, which was chartered under an act of the legislature of 1812.

Matilda was just 17 years old when she married 23-year old New Brunswick merchant, Clarkson Runyon, originally from Piscataway. The couple would become parents to 5 known children (3 boys/2 girls): Carolina Amanda Runyon (1829-1855), Simeon Mundy Runyon (1831-1893), Charles Cook Runyon (1837-1903), Helen Briggs Runyon (1839-1929), and Clarkson Runyon, Jr. (1845-1914).

Her husband later expanded his business interests and became a stockholder in the Newark India Rubber Company, which cemented the family's fortune for generations to come.

Matilda was only 34 when she was widowed in 1845, losing her husband of 17 years when he passed at age 40. Matilda never remarried, and would give birth to her last child, Clarkson Runyon Jr, just about 7 months after she buried her husband.

She would remain in New Brunswick until her youngest reached maturity, and in later years moved in with her daughter Helen, wife of Rev. Cornelius Brett, pastor of the Old Bergen Reformed Church in Jersey City. It was here Matilda died in 1897 at the age of 87. Her remains were brought back to New Brunswick an interred with her husband at Willow Grove.

All of her children married, and her sons were particularly successful. (See memorial of Clarkson Runyon, Sr. for more information.)
