ALICE NEVIUS

Death has claimed one of Greensburg's oldest citizens, Mrs. Alice Bird Nevius, 98, 211 N. Franklin, who died at Decatur County Memorial Hospital Monday at 8 p.m., after several months illness.

She was born Dec. 25, 1880, in Baltimore, Md., and was the daughter of William Lee and Amy Von Phul Bird. After graduating from the Thane Miller School for Girls in Cincinnati, she came to Greensburg to join her family, who had come here previously. From 1900 on she was a resident of Greensburg, where she was a respected and active member of the community, and was especially prominent in the social life.

Mrs. Nevius was married to Clyde Meek, who died in 1922, to Carlos Harrison, who died in 1941 and to Arthur Nevius, who died in 1957. She was a member of the Greensburg Presbyterian Church, the Greensburg Country Club and was a charter member of the PEO Sisterhood.

During her life she traveled extensively, including one trip around the world. She enjoyed good health and remained active until five months before her death.

She is survived by one son, Robert L. Meek, Sr., and one daughter, Mrs. William (Dorothy) Gannon, both of Greensburg; four grandchildren: Robert Meek and John Meek, both of Greensburg, William A. Gannon, Lexington, Ky., and Michael Gannon, Chattanooga, Tenn.; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Disney Hamilton, Greensburg.

She was preceded in death by three sisters: Mrs. Fred (Anna Bird) Thomas, Mrs. Curtis (Mary Louise) Elkins and Mrs. Roy (Amy) DeArmond and one brother, William Lee Bird.

The services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home with the Rev. F. William Clemenson officiating and with burial in South Park Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
