Sam C Covert, 78, widely known citizen of Greensburg, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Thomason some at 426 North Franklin street. Several months ago Mr Covert suffered a slight stroke and thereafter experienced declining health. The immediate cause of his passing was a heart ailment.

Born in Greensburg on October 15, 1866, Mr Covert was the son of Dr C A and Mary A Covert. On May 19, 1891, he was married to Amanda H Thomson, daughter of Watson W and Mary Esther Thomson. The Rev William A Torrence, pastor of the Presbyterian church of which both were members, officiated.

Following the death of Mr Covert's father in 1910, Mr and Mrs Covert located in Ohio. Later, while living at Dayton, Mr Covert became connected with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad as immigration agent, moving to Richmond, Va, in 1918. In the following year he was appointed industrial agent of the railroad.

NAMED AGENT
In 1923 Mr Covert was appointed industrial agent of the Hocking Valley Railroad, which was owned and operated by the Chesapeake and Ohio. He continued his residence at Richmond, Va, and gained a wide acquaintance among business and civic leaders in the area served by the Hocking Valley Railroad. He was instrumental in the location of various new industries, warehouses and distributing stations in that territory.

Mr Covert had the distinction of being the first subscriber to The Greensburg Daily News. This was announced in the first edition of the newspaper at the time the paper was launched here on Jan 1, 1894 by Frank Trimble and Ed Lines.

Since 1928 Mr Covert had made Greensburg his home, although spending much time in and around Pittsburgh, Pa. He and Mrs Covert had returned their membershp to the Presbyterian church here.

SURVIVORS NAMED
The immediate survivors are: The widow, Mrs Amanda Covert, of this city; a brother, Moody Covert, of New Orleans, La; and the sister-in-law, Miss Mary E Thomson, of this city. A number of cousins reside in the area near Chicago and at Pittsburgh.

Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Howe funeral home. The Rev James Robertson, pastor of the local Presbyterian church, will officiate. Burial will be made in South Park cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Friday, it was announced.
