Marie was my best friend when we were in middle school at Floyd Light Middle School in Portland,Oregon.
Then her mother married in October 1972, her stepdad Herbert Heaton and the family moved, and we were in different middle schools for the 8th grade. Marie was now a student at Columbia View Junior High School. 3 months later, in January 1973, when Marie was 13 years old, Marie and her stepfather, her mother, her brother Jack, and her sisters Emily, Rebecca and Susan, students at Glenfair Elementary School, were killed when their home caught fire in the middle of the night. The gas heater in the home has been disconnected and the family had used 6 portable heaters to stay warm. The blaze was caused by a portable heater in the living room of 345 NE 162nd in Portland, Oregon.
Marie and her siblings are buried with her mother, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Gresham, Oregon. There is not a marker, but Memorial Park has verified that they are buried there.
