PORTSMOUTH — Edward J. Shea, 82, of Fields Road, passed away at his home, with his family by his side, on Tuesday, March 30, 2010.

Born in Portsmouth on Dec. 22, 1927, he was the son of Leo and Christina (Fullam) Shea. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1945, and upon graduation, enlisted in the U.S. Navy toward the end of World War II.

Ed worked at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard retiring in 1986. He was a member of Corpus Christi Parish, the Knights of Columbus, American Legion and the Elks.

He was devoted to his children and grandchildren and was an avid pool player.

Husband of the late Cecilia (Smiley) Shea, survivors include his children, Peter Shea of Portsmouth, Pamela Coughlin and husband, John, of Mont Vernon, Philip Shea of North Carolina, and Paul Shea of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Suzie Shea, Timothy Shea, John Coughlin Jr., Sean Coughlin, Kathryn Coughlin, William Coughlin, and Christina Shea; great-grandchildren, J.R., Marissa, Nathan, and Kylee Shea; a sister, Rita Herlihy of Dover, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his granddaughter, Kelly Shea, and five brothers and one sister.

Visiting hours will be held on Monday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home, 684 State St., Portsmouth. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church, 98 Summer St. Portsmouth. Burial will be private in Calvary Cemetery.
