Some sources have suggested he might be from Conn. The following information is interesting in consideration of where he was born and raised and where his family came from. "Trumbull Co., Ohio (Cleveland) is the second from the top county in Ohio on the Eastern Pennsylvanian border of the state. It is below Ashtabula above Mahorning and borderd on the left by Geuga and Portage Counties. It is very close to the Eastern section of Lake Erie.
The dates of origination for these counties are as follows:
Ashtubula Co - formed from Trumbull and Geauga 1808
Geauga - formed from Trumball in 1806
Portage Co. - Formed from Trumball iln 1808
Mahnoning Co. - formed from Trumbull in 1808
In 1800 Trumbull Co. was designated captial of the Western Reserve. The Western Reserve was a strip of land that bordered on Lake Erie and Pennsylvania that was reserved and goeverned by the state of Conn. from the deed of cession by Congress in 1786 when Conn. gave this land up to the State of Penn. This land was still Conn. Consider the gap of size Penn., and then you had a little chunk of Conn. left. In 1800 it stopped being governed by Conn. This area was called New Connecticut and has special architectural considerations and features. At one times this was referred to as the "Firelands" as it had suffered extremely from British Raids toward the end of the American Revolution. - Van Dusen, Albert E. "Connecticut," Random House, 1961, pg. 199

Pennsylvania Neighbors -
Mercer Co., Penn
Crawford Co., Penn.
Lawerence Co., Penn.

The only origins that I can find abut this name meaning is that Tunis is a type of sheep, there was an ancient city, Tunisia (Carthage in Greece). I wonder if it was his mothers' surname? The surname Tunis appears to originate from Scotland or the United Kingdom
