William Bookman (50493122)

Suggested edit: The son of John & Elizabeth (Smith) Bookman, his obituary claims he was born in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Neither birth location seen here is verified. In 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for farmer Amos Herr in West Lampeter Township, Lancaster County, but is in the 1863 draft registration living in Strasburg Township. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Lancaster September 22, 1861, and mustered into federal service there October 1 as a private with Co. E, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He re-enlisted as a Veteran Volunteer February 9, 1864, at Chattanooga, Tennessee, promoted to sergeant May 1, 1865, and honorably discharged by special order to date November 10, 1865, well after the rest of the regiment had left service.

He married Anna E. Zahn and fathered Enos C. (b. @1868), but Anna does not appear in the 1870 census. There are as yet unverified reports that he also married Mary Reitzel, fathering Harry R. (b. 01/19/62), and Laura LNU. He lived his final years with his nephew in Lancaster where he died in Lancaster General Hospital from "dilatation of right side of heart" with "mitral insufficiency" a contributing factor. His death certificate spells his surname "Buchman."
