Alexander Chalmers Lanier II was born Oct. 6, 1820 in Indiana and died Oct. 11, 1895 of continual malarial fever on West First St. (which is most likely the Lanier Mansion) in Madison Jefferson Co.,IN.

Alexander Chalmers Lanier II, son of James Franklin Doughty and Elizabeth (Gardner) Lanier, and grandson of Alexander Chalmers Sr. and Drusilla Cleaves (Doughty) Lanier.

Alexander Chalmers Lanier II, married Stella (Godman) Sering, daughter of Thomas J. and (?) Godman, and widow of Colonel Samuel B. Sering, Nov. 21, 1889. Alexander and Stella were childhood sweethearts.

Oldest son of James Franklin Doughty Lanier, Alexander Chalmers Lanier II took over the family estate when his father moved to New York in 1851. The property was deeded to him for one dollar. Alexander was a Yale graduate and for a brief time active in local business firms. But he gained notoriety as an amateur horticulturist, maintaining the spectacular gardens and building greenhouses at the Lanier mansion, which are currently being restored. Much of the produce he gave to charity.
