Emma Louise, Mrs. Fred Baumgarten, Sr., daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Herman Brueckner, was born on August 15, 1863, in Blackhawk County, Iowa, where her father was then pastor of a rural Lutheran congregation. As an infant she was baptized by her father, and later was confirmed by him after having been instructed in the articles of the Christian faith as conferred by the Lutheran church. Her childhood was spent at Pine Hill, Michigan.

In 1881 she came to the town of Westfield in Sauk County with her parents. There she was married on November 25, 1881 to Fred Baumgarten in the town of Westfield. This marriage was blessed with seven children, of whom two daughters, Bertha and Helen, preceded their mother in death. After their marriage the young couple lived for some years on a farm in the town of Westfield, then moved to Ableman, now called Rock Springs, and again after some years, moved to the Baraboo community which was then her residence for 57 years.

While living in this community the deceased and her husband were members of St. John's Lutheran church, and as long as they were able took an active interest in the affairs of the congregation and its societies. Her husband preceded her in death on October 5, 1956, at the age of almost 98 years. After the death of her husband she made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Gary Van Loenen of Prairie du Sac, Wis. During the course of last summer she spent some five weeks in the hospital at Prairie du Sac, and then was removed to a nursing home in Prairie du Sac. On Christmas day she was again taken to the hospital at Prairie du Sac, where she passed away in the faith of her Savior on Saturday, December 28, 1957 at 1:00 o'clock in the morning. Shortly before Christmas she had received the holy Sacrament to the strengthening of her faith. He age came to 94 years, 4 months and 13 days. She is survived by fours sons, Fred, Alex, and Otto of Baraboo and Edward of Rock Springs, by one daughter, Mrs. Agnes Van Loenen of Prairie du Sac, two brothers Alfred Brueckner of Garner, Iowa, and the Rev. Moritz Brueckner of Chelsea, Michigan, by three sisters, Mrs. Augusta Heim- reich of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Louise Goebel of Mendota, Illinois, and Mrs. Sophia Gaetzlaff of Tama, Iowa, also by 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and many other more distant relatives.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran church and burial in Walnut Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were Arthur, Ted, Ralph and Harold Baumgarten, Robert Van Loenen and Ernest Koenig.
