He was born in Weston, Idaho (Everyone called him by his
initials-JN Hoopes). He served a mission in the South Central Eastern States. Later after his mission he worked on a mule train hauling materials from Santa Fe, New Mexico to California across the desert moving supplies. Later he herded sheep down in the Utah area somewhere. He wrote about
driving a band of sheep right through State Street in Salt Lake City and mentioned that before they were out of Salt Lake City they had as many children following the sheep as they had sheep. He farmed in the Iona District for several years. In his retirement years at Dubois, Clark County, Idaho, he was the probate judge and was elected three terms in that capacity.

He married Annie Marie Lund 24 Jun 1902 at Logan, Cache, Utah.

They had the following 12 children: Jonathan Lund Hoopes, Annie Marie Hoopes, Baby Hoopes, Ruby Hoopes, Joseph Heber Hoopes, Florence Hoopes, Jediah Louis Hoopes, Wendell Lund Hoopes, Warner Peter Hoopes, Margaret Hoopes, Baby Hoopes & Veda Matilda Hoopes
