Luke Hinshaw was born in Ross County, Ohio to Elias and Sarah (Williams) Hinshaw. His parents moved to Indiana, then Iowa, and in 1845 Luke joined his brothers Isaac and George on the Oregon Trail. George was killed by Indians in Idaho in August, and Luke reached Oregon in November. He married Isabella McKinney in Washington Co. OR on Nov 23, 1851. They moved to a claim near Albany, Linn Co. OR, and on to Walla Walla, WT in 1859. Luke opened a store near Waitsburg, which was sold after a few years, and they moved to Centerville OR. In 1880, they moved again, establish a homestead south of Mohler, Lincoln Co WA. They raised five children, Dora, Walter, Rachel, John D. and Wilbur M.
