PROMINENT FUNERAL DIRECTOR SUCCUMBS AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Charles R Howe, 62, prominently identified with the funeral profession in Greensburg and Decatur county for over a quarter of a century and a resident of Greensbur for the past 40 years, passed away at the Methodist hospital at Indianapolis at 7:40 a.m. Monday.

In declining health for several years, Mr Howe had been a patient at the hospital for the past six weeks.

Funeral rites will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Greensburg Presbyterian church. The Rev John F Williams, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be made in South Park cemetery.

Friends may call at the Howe funeral home until noon Wednesday and from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Presbyterian church.

Born in Bartholomew county, south of Hope, on Oct 31, 1884, he was a member of a family of six children of William and Helen Thomas Howe. His marriage to Mae E Douglas took place in Greensburg on May 1, 1909. She preceded him in death on Feb 1, 1934. He was married to Lela O Minor on Sept 4, 1937.

ENTERED PROFESSION IN 1921
As a young man Mr Howe located in Greensburg and was first employed at the store owned by the late R C Shoffner. From 1909 to 1919 he was associated with the firm of J M Woodfill's Sons, resigning to accept a position with the Minear Dry Goods Co.

In 1920 Mr Howe was graduated from the Indiana College of Mortuary Science and in 1921 actively entered the funeral profession here as a member of the firm of Kirby and Howe.

Following the passing of Mr Kirby he acquired ownership of the firm, which he operated for nearly 20 years. At the timeof his death he was one of the owners of the Howe funeral home.

Widely known in civic and fraternal affairs in Greensburg and Decatur county, Mr Howe was recognized as one of the public spirited citizens of this community.

He was active in the affairs of Greensburg lodge No 148, Knights of Pythias in which he had served as district deputy for a number of years. He also served several terms as keeper of records and seals and was a past chancellor commander of the Pythian lodge here. He had been a member of the building committee of the Indiana Pythian Home, located at Lafayette.

Mr Howe was affiliated with greensburg lodge No 475, B P O Elks, Greensburg lodge No 36 F & A M, Greensburg Chapter No 8, Royal Arch Masons, Greensburg Council, No 74, Royal and Select Masons, Greensburg Commandery No 59, Knights Templar and Decatur lodge No 103, I O O F.

Holding a high standing in his profession, he was affiliated with state and national funeral directors' associations. He was identified with the Greensburg Chamber of Commerce and was a widely known layman of the Greensburg Presbyterian church.

The survivors are: The widow, Mrs Lela Howe; two daughters, Mrs Dallas R (Beaulah Mae) Gilliland and Mrs Max T (Carol) Clifton, both of Greensburg; two grandchildren, Charles Edwin Gilliland and Nancy Lynn Clifton; two step-sons, Robert M Miner, of Wabash; four step-grandchildren, Mary Ann, Michael, John and Gaynell Milner; a brother, Lloyd W Howe, dean of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science at Indianapolis; and a sister, Mrs Glen P Elliott, of near Burney. Two brothers and one sister, Albert, Orval and Minnie Howe are deceased.
