Brownstown Banner Obituary, published Wed, 7 May 1902
Our community was greatly shocked last Sunday morning on hearing of the death of Miss Lottie Lutes, only daughter of Jacob S. Lutes and wife, whose death occurred Sunday morning at 3 o'clock. She was taken sick on Saturday evening with a congestive chill and Drs. Gibson and Pettigrew were called and rendered all the medical aid within their power but to no avail. Miss Lottie was a model young lady and her winning ways made friends of all who came in contact with her. She joined the M.E. church under Bro. Hail's charge several years ago and was a faithful worker in the Sunday School, being one of its best teachers. A class of twelve girls were pall bearers. She was born March 8, 1877, her age at the time of her death being 25 years, 1 months and 26 days. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Vancleve at the M.E. church Monday morning after which the remains were laid to rest in the Houston cemetery. The grief stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community. Weep not, dear parents, she is not dead, but sleeping. Not our will, but God's be done.
