He was the grandson of William Harrison Coffman, an officer in the Confederacy and a State Representative for the state of Texas.
His grandmother was Nancy Cordelia (Brown) Coffman. She came from a line of American Patriots, going back to Thomas Pettus who was a Burgess in the House of Burgess during the Revolutionary War.
Horace entered the Navy on 28 May 1944 and received his basic training at Camp Wallace, Texas and in San Diego.
He had been overseas for six weeks when he was killed in a truck accident in New Guinea. Horace was a true Patriot whose life was cut short at age 25.
