Cox Funeral Home

Bastrop, LA

Mildred Helen Brodnax Kinnaird, known as "Granny" to many, went to her heavenly home at the age of 90 on Friday, March 26, 2010. She was born on May 21, 1919 in Bastrop. Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, March 29 at New Hope Baptist Church in Jones, LA with Rev. Larry Linson officiating, assisted by Rev. Jimmy Yocum and Rev. Gary Traylor. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bastrop under the direction of Cox Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5:30 PM until 8:00 PM on Sunday, March 28 at Cox Funeral Home of Bastrop.

Mrs. Kinnaird was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Kinnaird; son, Tom Kinnaird; and two grandsons, Justin Kinnaird and Jeffrey Wooden and son-in-law Harold Wooden.

She will be greatly missed by her son, Venoy Kinnaird and wife Pauline of Bastrop, LA; three daughters, Reatagae Wooden, of Rayville, LA; Becky Johnson and husband Earnest of Little Rock, AR; Cindy Shockey and husband Bill of Baton Rouge, LA and daughter-in-law, Jeannie Kinnaird of Bastrop, LA. Her smiling face will be missed by her eight grandchildren, Hal Wooden and wife Sheri, Tom Kinnaird, Jr. and wife Julie, Jeana Jankowski and husband Chuck, Julie McCall and husband Chris, Jennifer Stephenson and husband Kenneth, Jessica, Danielle and Andrew Shockey. She is also survived by 12 great grandchildren.

Granny was a lifelong resident of Morehouse Parish. She grew up in Bastrop and moved to Jones early in her marriage. She resided in the Jones community until 2003 when she moved to Bastrop and resided at The Arbor. She was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in Jones.

Granny's zest for life was unsurpassed. In May of 2009, her children hosted a 90th birthday celebration at the Snyder Museum in Bastrop in her honor. During the month of her birthday, her mailbox over flowed with over 100 birthday cards. Granny remained very active during her 90th year and was able to attend multiple family events during this period.

Granny's family was her career as well as her hobby. The family that she nurtured and now leaves behind was her greatest achievement and her legacy. Granny was absolutely, positively, devoted to her family.

She was an avid gardener. The community of Jones may have been small, but there was nothing small about her flower garden. Few city parks could compete with her beautiful array of flowers. Frequently travelers stopped to admire her cannas, roses, and daylilies.

Pallbearers will be Gerald Kinnaird, Bruce Gasquet, Chuck Jankowski, Chris McCall, Kenneth Stephenson, John Knox Nunn, Mike Whorton, and B.J. McKnight.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 120, Jones, LA. 71250.

The family would like to thank the employees at The Arbor of Bastrop. Granny continued to make many special memories while residing there the past seven years. The family is most appreciative of Crossroads Hospice for their tremendous support.
