Born 5 Dec 1923, near Sulphur, OK, she was the eldest of 8 children of George Allen Bennett and Era Deverl (Fowler) Bennett. She grew up in the Arnold View Community near Maysville and beginning school there and graduated from Wayne High School in 1942.
Doris David "D.D." Hawkins and Venita married on 21 Nov 1942 in Blanchard, McClain Co., OK. They moved to CA during W.W. II and raised 4 children. D. D. was in the Army and Venita worked as a Rosie the Riveter. They returned to Wayne, McClain Co., OK, in 1951.
Dedicating more than 42 years caring for others as a nurse and as a pastor's wife, she served as the church treasurer at Filmore Missionary Baptist Church and later at Sunray Baptist Church in Purcell., where she was a member. She worked at the Purcell Hospital for many years and later with Dr. Robert R. Sullivan in Norman where she retired.
Preceded in death by her husband, D.D.; her parents; 4 brothers, Glenn, Dean, Herman and Jay Bennett; a sister, Lori and a sister-in-law, Shirley Owens, her survivors include her son, Max Hawkins; 3 daughters, Donna De Mun, Penny Hunter, and Dee Ann Gay; her brother, Quinin Bennett; sister, Rita Liberty; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and 3 great- great-grandchildren.
