Evelyn Briscoe Irby

COTULLA, TX.- Evelyn Briscoe Irby, 94, of Dilley, TX. died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2000 in the Frio Hospital, Pearsall, TX. Mrs. Irby was born Feb. 5, 1905, in Frio County, TX. to J. Payne Briscoe and Blanche Hugo. She grew up in and around Hebbronville, where her father was president of the local bank, until he became president of the Laredo National Bank and the family moved to Laredo. She attended Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio. In 1942, she enlisted in the Woman's Army Corps, retiring on Dec. 31, 1962, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. She returned to the Hugo family property at Dilley where her father had bred one of the finest herds of cattle in the state of Texas from his outstanding Santa Gertrudis bull, El Capitan.

She lived there until her death, Mrs. Irby was the niece of noted Houston architect, Birdsall P. Briscoe. Her great-great grandfather was, John Richardson Harris, one of Stephen F. Austin's original 300 Texas colonists who founded the town of Harrisburg. Harris County is named for him. The home of his widow, Jane Birdsall Harris, served as the capital of the Republic of Texas for three weeks prior to the Battle of San Jacinto. Mrs. Irby's great-grandfather, Judge Andrew Briscoe, signed the Texas Declaration of Independence, participated in the Battle of San Jacinto, served as the first chief justice for Harrisburg (now Harris) Count, and promoted the first railroad in Texas. Briscoe County is named for him. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Ladies' Reading Club, the first woman's study club in Texas, were founded in the Houston home of his widow, Mary Jane Harris Briscoe.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Hugo Payne Briscoe; and her husband, Richard Irby. She is survived by cousins, Dorothy Knox Howe Houghton, Harris Milton Howe, Rowena Woodward Houghton, Adele Birdsall Houghton, Knox Briscoe Howe II, and Edward Alexander Howe and by the families of Hazel Hugo (Terry Hugo, John Hugo, Kathryn Gage), Richard Hardin (Philip Hardin, Ann Hardin), and Fran Hugo (Eunice McCoy, Charlotte Sievers).

The family wishes to thank Esparanza Gonzalez for her unselfish love and devotion as nurse and caregiver to Mrs. Irby. They also wish to thank Carlos Martinez and Wayne Hastings for their loyalty and unfailing support over many years. Graveside services were conducted in the Briscoe family plot, Oak Hill Cemetery in Goliad, TX. at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000 with the Rev. Roland A. Timberlake, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Peter's Funeral Home, Cotulla, TX.
